Organic Bread - March 08

From the latest review from the government’s Pesticides Residues Committee (PRC), it has been revealed that over half of the bread sampled had pesticides in it. With nearly a quarter of the bread having multiple pesticides in it. Compared with the bread sampled in 2006 this is an increase of 3% of the number of samples containing pesticides.

Factors including milling methods, changes in wheat varieties and baking technology have made industrial bread unpalatable and indigestible for significant numbers of people. As well as these problems the FSA are proposing compulsory mass medication through bread. But this decision has been delayed further (thank god!).

The results from organic bread samples showed no pesticides found in the organic bread tested.

The Soil Association among others are supporting the new Real Bread Campaign, which aims to encourage the production, consumption and enjoyment of bread made with natural and organic ingredients.

Ethical Air Freight of Organic Food - March 08

There has been extensive talks, meetings, recommendations, etc lasting four months surrounding the Soil Associations standards concerning the issue of air freight. The conclusion was made that the Soil Associations standards should be changed so that all organic produce that has to be air-freighted now has to follow the Ethical Trade or the Fairtrade Foundation’s standard.

The Soil Association Ethical Trade standards: apply to the whole supply chain, and require fair trading arrangements, ethical employment relationships including fair pay, and concrete social and cultural contributions to the local community or society more widely. Those certified to these standards can use the Soil Association's Ethical Trade symbol. Being able to demonstrate compliance with Ethical Trade Standards (or Fairtrade standards) offers an effective marketing tool for air freighting businesses in the face of criticism over their carbon footprint.
